Her Situation
Bex, an 18-month old Rottweiler mix, was found in an overcrowded high-kill shelter in San Antonio. She had been adopted once in early September but was returned a week later for "medical issues", likely just stress and kennel cough from shelter life.
After being returned, she sat in the shelter for several weeks with no interest from adopters. When the shelter reached capacity, she was placed on the euthanasia list.
The Rescue Operation
Partners: Pets Alive San Antonio + Red Fern Animal Rescue (Colorado)
When Bex's post appeared in a rescue Facebook group on a Thursday night, time was already running out and she was scheduled for euthanasia the next day.
After numerous calls and emails to local rescues on Friday morning, I had not had any success in getting her pulled out of the shelter. By that evening I had given up and thought she was gone. But later that night Pets Alive San Antonio responded said they had reached out to Red Fern Animal Rescue in Colorado. (where I'm located). Somehow, Bex had escaped a horrible fate and had not been euthanised Friday as planned. But she was on the list again for Saturday, so time was of the essence. Despite the extremely short notice, Red Fern called Saturday morning and found a foster volunteer they work with who able to reach the shelter and pull Bex just in time.
She spent several days decompressing in foster care and receiving a medical check before transport to Colorado. After a long 16 hour journey on a transport, she finally arrived here and I've been able to shower her with love ever since!
Today
Bex is now thriving in her forever home in Colorado with me, where she's learning to trust again and showing her playful, loving personality. She has a Rottweiler sister named Mammoth, and they play together every day!
This rescue was made possible through Pets Alive San Antonio and Red Fern Animal Rescue.
